It was Autumn of 2014 when students of Jadavpur University, a premier institution in Calcutta protested against mishandling of the complaints of molestation of a female student by the university authorities. The students protested against the Vice-Chancellor and soon the situation spiralled out of control as the state government tried to bulldoze the protests by involving police to disperse the students. The students, beaten by police as well as local thugs of the state government, arranged a procession in protest of the government brutalities, and during this time, the hashtag #Hokkalorob gained momentum. Hok Kalorob (হোক কলরব) literally means let the clamour start/continue. These posts were created around the time of #Hokkalorob protests in solidarity with the students of Jadavpur University:
যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ঘটনায় তৃণমূলের মুখ ঢাকার আর জায়গা নেই। একে তো মনে হয় এক পেটোয়া তাঁবেদারকে ভিসি বানিয়ে বসিয়েছে, সে যদি নিজের কাজ ঠিকঠাক করত তাহলে কোনো ব্যাপার ছিলনা, তারপর পুলিশ আর গুন্ডা ঢুকিয়ে ছাত্রদের পেটানো আর ছাত্রীদের যৌননিগ্রহ করা হলো। সেই রাতে ওই বাওয়াল না হলে হয়ত ওরা তাও কিছু সুরাহা করার চেষ্টা করত কিন্তু কোন পার্টি কবে নিজের ভুল মেনে নিয়ে সেই ভুল শুধরানোর চেষ্টা করেছে? ফলে ভিসি সরানো আর পুলিশী হামলার কথা তো দুরের কথা, পরদিন থেকে যা শুরু হলো তাকে চোরের মার বড় গলা ছাড়া আর কিছু বলা যায়না। একে ছিঃক্ষামন্ত্রী বলল ভিছিঃ সরানো হবেনা কার বাপের ক্ষমতা আছে কি করবে, আর অন্য দিকে ছিঃএমের তো বাঁধা বুলি মাও, বাংলার শত্রু, তিলকে তাল ইত্যাদি ইত্যাদি। তার ওপর আবার ছ্যাঃত্র পরিষদ শুরু করেছে কাদা ছোঁড়াছুড়ি কোন মেয়ে কত খাটো প্যান্ট পরল, তার চরিত্রও সেরকম শ্যালো কিনা, কে ক্যাম্পাসে মদ গাঁজা খায়, সংবাদমাধ্যম পয়সা খেয়েছে, ছাত্রছাত্রীরা কেন ক্যাম্পাসে গলাগলি ঢলাঢলি করে আরো কত হাবিজাবি। হ্যাশট্যাগ খোলা হয়েছে হোক ক্যালানি – ওই গায়ের জোর ই কি এদের বল? এখন ছাত্ররা পথে নেমে মিছিল করেছে তাই আবার লোক দেখানো কাউন্টার-মিছিল হচ্ছে আজ, তাতে কতজন ছ্যাঃত্র থাকবে বলা মুশকিল তবে শেষে ডিম পাঁউরুটি থাকলে হয়ত আরো কিছু বুদ্ধিজীবি লাইন লাগাতে পারে।
বলি প্রতিবাদটা কিসের বিরুদ্ধে? কোন দাবিটা অযৌক্তিক যে পুলিশ আর পোষা গুন্ডা দিয়ে মারধর করতে হবে ছাত্রদের? নাকি এসব Red Herring আরো বড় ইস্যুগুলোকে জনগনের চোখের আড়াল করতে? আন্দোলন দিয়ে তৃনমূল উত্পাটন হবেনা, এদিকে দেখেছি বেশ কিছু আগ্রহী বামপন্থী চাইছেন এই সব ছাত্রছাত্রীদের দিয়ে সারদা আরাবুল এসবের বিরুদ্ধে কাজে লাগাতে। মনে রাখবেন প্রতিটা আন্দোলনের একটু নির্দিষ্ট এজেন্ডা থাকে, এই ক্ষেত্রে ছিল টিএমছিঃ ছাত্র পরিষদেরই সমর্থক ছাত্রীটির শ্লীলতাহানির তদন্ত আর দোষীদের শাস্তি, তার সাথে এখন ভিছিঃ সরানোর দাবিটাও যুক্তিযুক্ত। আর হাজারো নতুন নতুন এজেন্ডা টেনে মূল আন্দোলনের সমর্থন কমানোর চেষ্টা করবেন না। এগুলো বিরোধী পার্টির এজেন্ডা, তারা পথে নামুক, ছাত্ররা স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত ভাবে সেখানে যোগ দিলে দিক। এক ঢিলে দুই পাখি মারতে গিয়ে ঢিলটাই শেষে গচ্চা যাবে। SFI ছাত্র সংগঠন, তাদের সমর্থন এই অরাজনৈতিক আন্দোলনে কাম্য ছাত্রদের প্রতিনিধি হিসেবে, ছাত্রদের প্রতি সরকারি তান্ডবের বিরুদ্ধে। কিন্তু আশ্চর্যের বিষয় টিএমছিঃ ছ্যাঃত্র পরিষদ নিজেও এই অবস্থান এ থাকতে পারত বাকি সবার সাথে, তারাও তো মূলত ছাত্র সংগঠন, সরকার যে রঙেরই হোক তাদের তো দায়িত্ব ছাত্রদেরই পক্ষে দাঁড়ানো। তবে যদি না তারা দোষীদের আড়াল করতে চায় আর কলেজ শেষে পার্টির দয়াদাক্ষিণ্য পাওয়ার আশায় থাকে।
যাই হোক, অবস্থা এখন যা, পুজোর পরে হুজুগ শেষ, মোমেন্টাম স্তব্ধ, সরকারী জুলুম যেমন চলছিল তেমনই চলবে, সিপিএমের নজির সব দিক দিয়ে টেক্কা না দেয়া অবধি তৃণমূলের শান্তি নেই। লালের জুলুম খতম করে এখন নীল-সাদার পালা – একেই না বলে পোরিবত্তন। জোর যার মুলুক তার। তবে টিএমছিঃ ছ্যাঃত্র পরিষদের কাছে অনুরোধ একটু লেখাপড়া জানা লোকজন যারা আদপে কলেজে যায় তাদেরকে দেবেন পোস্টার গুলো লিখতে, নাহলে পয়সা দিয়ে এক প্রুফরাইটার ভাড়া করতে পারেন। আর আপনাদের মহামান্য ছিঃএম ও তো মহিলা, তো মহিলাদের যদি একটু সম্মান সম্ভ্রম করেন তো ঐসব জামাকাপড়, জড়াজড়ি এইসব অপ্রাসঙ্গিক কুরুচিকর মন্তব্য বন্ধ করুন, জানি আপনাদের যুক্তির ভাঁড়ার শুন্য, অছিলা না বানালে মিছিল হবেনা, তবু চেষ্টা করতে পারেন সেই ফাটা রেকর্ড বাজাতে – সব সিপিএমের দোষ। লোকে খোরাক দিয়েই তুষ্ট থাকবে, অন্তত ঘেন্নায় আপনাদের মুখে থুতু দিতে চাইবেনা।

The students of Jadavpur University in Calcutta, India were peacefully protesting against molestation of a student and finding no positive response, they barricaded the vice-chancellor’s office. At 2am, on 17th September police entered the university campus and beaten students forming the barricade, molested female students, threatened them and detained in a police station without any charges. On the video footage, it emerged that some police were seen to be wearing flip flops, who were actually local goons of the ruling party using police uniform.
The following day, the government issued a statement that police used force as they had information that there were Maoist separatists among the students and they possessed dangerous weapons, while the students were actually singing the songs of protest. It was also claimed that this was a conspiracy by the recently defeated Communist Party of India (Marxist) to defame the government whilst the student movement is grossly apolitical at the beginning, although now being supported by the student wing of the communist party. Today in excess of 50,000 students from all universities in Calcutta took the streets of Calcutta in a peaceful protest rally. The support and solidarity are shown by many other institutions across India. #hokkalorab is the tag line for the movement, which actually means let the chaos begin!
There are only two demands from the students. First, the resignation of the vice-chancellor for allowing the merciless beating of student protesters by the police and local government cadres, and second, to form a committee to investigate the molestation incident that started the uprising. Calcutta has always protested against injustice, and this incident, which the government thought would be a regular operation, has found themselves in a sticky situation.
